Hobbs descendants

The trail gets murky for Meta Hobbs' and for Eileen Hickson's descendents. We'd love to hear from them and know more!

1. Edwin Murray Barton (Barty) Hobbs' children: No evidence has been found of any children of the marriage of Meta's son Edwin Murray Barton (Barty) Hobbs to Alice Michod in 1938. His earlier marriage in New Zealand to Isabel Devereaux resulted in a son Anthony (Tony) Barton Prior Hobbs (1930-79).

Saving ‘fallen women'(prostitutes, incest and rape victims, and single mothers) was a key concern for philanthropic women in the late 18th and 19th century, but help often came at a heavy price for the women concerned: incarceration in a ‘Magdalen’ asylum and a heavy diet of punitive religiosity, penitence and deprivation. Ruth and Dorothea were always very close as sisters. In c.1910-1911, Ruth wrote a 14pp description of a walk they took in Queensland, from Caboolture Railway Station to the farm belonging to their youngest stepbrother Egerton and his wife Gracie at Nambour. They could have taken a train all the way, but decided instead to walk part the way. Ruth described how they wore old clothes (Ruth's inexpertly dyed by herself), took a billy for water for making tea, and a knapsack…

My mother was quite a conventional, church-going woman but one story indicated that she was not always so well-behaved. Her story was that her best friend at school was an only child of a wealthy (Jewish, if that's relevant) family: I think her name was Ida. Mum's story was that Ida was quite neglected, so when she decided to tell the family's chauffeur to collect her early one afternoon and drive her to the pictures and back, no-one in her family knew. Ida persuaded Mum to play truan…

Her parents were Charles and Mary Skynner of , Cookham, Berkshire, England. Her mother was née Orlebar, of Henwick House, Bedfordshire. When recalling his emigration to Australia, TLM-P acknowledged his mother's self-sacrificial support, writing that:
'Mother … [gave me all the money] she could possibly spare from their modest allowance and made me take the few sovereigns which would diminish home comforts for the quarter [til next payday].'

He was born nearly 99 years ago, on 16 May 1911 into a different world: when the population of Australia was less than 4.5 million, approximately that of metropolitan Sydney today. A month before he was born a plane flew, for the first time, non-stop between London-Paris; and when he was 4 months old, suffragettes stormed the British parliament demanding the vote. Being an heiress or a wealthy widow could be hazardous. Women could have money settled on them, but generally once married their husbands owned all their property and money. Thomas Prior married (1) Jemima Dickson at Millbrook, Southampton, England on 28 November 1812. Jemima's father was presumably also in the military forces as he was Captain Dickson Esq. of Prospect House, Southampton. As her family home indicates, her family were comfortably off. Her brother reinforces this assumption as, when he died in the 1870s, he left bequests of several thousands of pounds.

Thomas Prior married (1) Jemima Dickson at Millbrook, Southampton, England on 28 November 1812. Jemima's father was presumably also in the military forces as he was Captain Dickson Esq. of [Prospect House, Southampton]. She had been married for a nearly five years when, on 4 November 1817, she died.

This page details Matilda and TLM-P's 11 younger children. Four (William, Weeta, Lodge and Matilda) died when babies. Of the 6 sons who survived, only the eldest (Thomas) led a relatively untroubled life. Hervey and Hugh were probably both alcoholics and died in their 30s; Morres died lonely and depressed when he was 44. Redmond and Egerton also struggled. As sug…

The girls

Typically of the nineteenth century, the girls were educated at home. We know that the elder siblings and mother/stepmother acted as teachers as well as an unknown number of governesses and other specialist teaches at different times. In March 1866 Miss Medley was paid £4.6.8 'for tuition'. It is possible that one of Matilda's family also taught them as there is an entry in November 1867 of Tom de M. M-P paying R. All photos, unless otherwise stated, are from Nora's photo album.

On 18 December 1872, a little over four years after Matilda died, the widowed TLM-P married again. His second wife was Nora Clarina Barton (3 December 1846-12 May 1931). Her unusual second name was due to one of her godmothers. According to her mother's Barton family bible, Nora was baptised on 10 February 1847 with her godparents listed in the bible as her uncle and aunt Nathaniel and Honoria Barton, and h…

Much to Nora's dismay, she and TLM-P she had 8 children. Unlike Matilda, Nora gave birth in urban settings with help at hand. She also remained healthy, so her babies were not so vulnerable: only one (Emmeline) died in infancy. Her children's choices when they grew up were firmly against marriage.
TLM-Ps Political and Postal Career

When Queensland separated from the colony of NSW in 1859, TLM-P and other squatters were determined to consolidate their interests. The idea of mass democracy was still a radical idea and property owners were generally firm in their conviction that they alone had the right to rule - even if it did mean a few women managed to vote before legislation was amended to exclude them. TLM-P stood for the first election in 1860, but failed to win the seat of East Moret…

Richard Prior, Captain Thomas Prior’s eldest son with estates at Rathdowney, Ely and, after his sister Isabella's death, Derbyshire.

In 1685, the Catholic James II succeeded his more pragmatic brother Charles II and in 1689 passed an Act of Attainder. This Act not only reversed the Irish land grants to Protestants such as the Priors, but condemned over 2,000 of them to defend themselves from the charge of high treason. TLM-P wrote his 'Draft memoirs of a voyage from London to Sydney on the Roxburgh Castle', c.1879 for his daughter Rosa Praed to use in her planned 'sketch of colonial life'. He wrote it, he explained, while suffering from lumbago (lower back pain) which left him unable to do physical work. He was relying on his memory of events over 40 years ago, so this evidence must be treated with caution. As well, as with most memoirs, he highlights the aspect of his youthful self …

When TLM-P wrote his memoir about his voyage to Australia, he commented that he was too ill to work outside, 'almost the first time after sixty years of robust health'. That good health until he was 60 years old, and his need for physical activity outside, was a major influence on his life in Australia. The timing of his arrival in the colony was one of mixed blessings. On one hand, a drought during 1838-39 contributed to a severe economic depression in the 1840s. TLM-P's…

Thomas (Tom) Prior M.A.

Thomas (Tom) Prior, (1679-21 October 1751) was Colonel Thomas Prior's second son and is the star of the family. Nothing is known about his mother, not even her name. He never married and had no known children. When he died, Ireland mourned a public benefactor. The inscription on his grave reads:

TLM-P was only just 19 years old when, on 29 December 1838, he boarded a ship for Australia. TLM-P, Thomas and Eliza Prior's elder son, is the focus of this history & was the 3rd Thomas Murray Prior in an unbroken line. In 1834 he left his home and family to emigrate to Australia. What was he like, and what drove him to leave his family for a penal colony some five months away by sailing ship? We have a huge amount of evidence, but that requires sifting and appreciating the different perspectives of the writers. He appears to be an energetic man with a driving need to…

Diaries were written for a variety of purposes in the 19th century, with only some meant to be private. TLM-P's diaries appear to be primarily written as aide memoires. The ones written when he is at Maroon or other properties are the documents of a working farmer. One modern reader complains of the boredom of reading, day after day, 'Morning Fine', concluding that, overall, 'his diaries are a study in dullness'.
